Review of Viktor Gjika’s Films

Drawing on close readings of cinematography, sound design, and allegorical imagery, this review reevaluates Viktor Gjika’s Rrugë te Bardha / White Paths (1974) and Gjeneral Gramafoni / The General Gramophone (1977) as sophisticated acts of coded resistance within Enver Hoxha’s Albania. In White Paths, the film’s sparse dialogue and ambient soundscape reconceptualize the telephone-line repairman’s labor as a form of secular martyrdom, subtly critiquing state surveillance and ideological conformity. Conversely, The General Gramophone employs satirical scale and an overlapping sound environment to expose the theatricality and fragility of nationalist propaganda. By juxtaposing these contrasting formal strategies—measured minimalism versus carnivalesque excess—the review argues that Gjika’s work not only subverts socialist-realist conventions but also advances our understanding of how cinema can convey nuanced dissent under authoritarian regimes.
