A Covariant Scalar–Gauge–Axion Theory with Horndeski "John" Coupling Action, Variations, Hyperbolicity, Energy Conditions, NR Limit, and EFT Dispersion

We formulate and analyze a covariant scalar–gauge–axion theory coupled to gravity that includes a Horndeski “John” operator and an auxiliary EFT block implementing controlled \(\Box^{2}\) dispersion without higher–time–derivative ghosts. The action contains: (i) a complex scalar \(\psi\) minimally coupled to a \(\mathrm{U}(1)\) gauge field \(A_\mu\) via \(D_\mu=\nabla_\mu - i e A_\mu\); (ii) a pseudoscalar axion \(\theta\) with potential \(U(\theta)\) and topological term \(\theta F_{\mu\nu}\tilde F^{\mu\nu}\); (iii) a real scalar \(S\) with kinetic term \(\lambda_T(\nabla S)^2\) and John coupling \(\chi_T G^{\mu\nu}\nabla_\mu S \nabla_\nu S\); and (iv) an auxiliary pair \((\varphi,\Lambda)\) that reproduces \(+\alpha(\Box\psi)^{\!*}(\Box\psi)\) at energies \(E\ll \Lambda_{\rm EFT}\). We derive the Euler–Lagrange equations for \((\psi,A_\mu,\theta,S,g_{\mu\nu})\), the sector stress–energy tensors, and the principal symbol, showing a second-order, strongly hyperbolic system for \(\lambda_T>0\) with \(|\chi_T|H^2\ll \lambda_T\). On flat FRW with \(S=S(t)\), the tensor quadratic action yields an effective Planck mass \(M_\ast^2=M_{\rm Pl}^2-\chi_T \dot S^{\,2}\) and a luminal gravitational-wave speed \(c_T^2=1\); viability requires \(M_\ast^2>0\) today. The nonrelativistic limit of the \(\psi\) equation reduces to minimally coupled Gross–Pitaevskii/Schrödinger dynamics with chemical potential \(eA_0\) and an EFT biharmonic correction \(+\alpha\nabla^4\phi\). We check NEC/WEC and give a conservative parameter window consistent with GW170817-level constraints and stability. The framework reduces to GR, Maxwell–axion electrodynamics, and canonical scalar dynamics in appropriate limits, while supporting axion-induced magnetoelectric effects and controlled higher-gradient dispersion for phenomenology in cosmology, condensed-matter analogs, and axion electrodynamics.PROTECTED UNDER PATENT.ANTI-MILITARIZATION/WEAPONIZATION/GOVERNMENT CLAUSES.
