Optimization of <scp>LA</scp> <scp>‐ICP</scp> ‐ <scp>MS</scp> Zircon U‐Pb Dating Parameters Based on Orthogonal Experimental Design

ABSTRACT Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) has emerged as a vital tool for U‐Pb dating in geological studies, owing to its high accuracy, sensitivity, rapid analysis, and micron‐level spatial resolution. However, there is a notable lack of sensitivity analyses regarding the instrumental parameters that impact U‐Pb age quality. The present study aimed to optimise U‐Pb age determinations by investigating eight key parameters that affect LA‐ICP‐MS mineral analysis. An orthogonal experimental design was utilised for the systematic evaluation of these parameters. To effectively eliminate lead contamination from sample surfaces, nitric acid washing was implemented. The reduction of the measurement time for each zircon to just 35 s enabled the establishment of optimised settings that significantly enhance both analytical quality and efficiency. The present research provides a structured approach to parameter optimization, offering valuable insights for improving LA‐ICP‐MS operating procedures, increasing cost‐effectiveness in geochemical laboratories, and enabling researchers to master this technology more quickly.
