A Dual Soft‐Gel Phase Platform for Future Stable Aqueous Batteries

Electrode design is crucial for advancing battery technology. However, conventional solid- and liquid-based electrodes face inherent limitations of solid electrodes suffer from lattice defect accumulation during cycling, while liquid electrodes are prone to uncontrolled species migration and cross-contamination. Here, a dual soft-gel phase platform for aqueous battery construction is presented, which overcomes these challenges by exploiting the distinct interaction strengths among battery components. In this design, sulfate anions in the electrolyte strongly bind water molecules, while water-soluble polymers, encapsulating redox-active species, interact weakly with water, inducing phase separation that underpins the soft-gel structure. The broad feasibility of this construction framework using diverse combinations of redox-active species and water-soluble polymers is demonstrated. Furthermore, the platform offers high green recyclability, with most components recoverable by a simple water bath. This dual soft-gel phase platform opens a new avenue for designing aqueous batteries with stable lifespan and enhanced sustainability.
