Back Matter
Speculum, an English-language quarterly first published in 1926, was the first journal in North America devoted to the Middle Ages.It is open to contributions in all disciplinary fields and methodologies studying the Middle Ages, a period that ranges from approximately 500 to 1500.European, Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew, Asian, and Slavic studies are included.Highly focused studies are appreciated, but preference is ordinarily given to articles of interest to readers in more than one discipline and beyond the specialty in question.Articles taking a more global approach to medieval studies are also welcomed, particularly when the topic engages with one or more of the core areas of study outlined above.Submissions with appeal to a broad cross section of medievalists are highly encouraged. In keeping with the Medieval Academy of America's goal of representing all fields of medieval studies, individual issues usually include articles on a variety of subjects, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.Articles on interdisciplinary topics or articles that tackle large interpretative questions, undertake the synthetic analysis of major methodologies, or consider newer theoretical approaches to medieval studies are encouraged.Authors should also consider the multidisciplinary audience of Speculum, should craft their material to appeal to a large audience of medievalists, and should provide sufficient context for readers who are not already experts in the subject matter of their articles.Translations and editions of medieval texts will be considered for publication only when they are an essential part of a larger study; in such cases the edition or translation may be included as an appendix.Longer translations, editions, data sets, and appendices may be published in the online edition of the journal.Articles should present original, previously unpublished scholarship of the highest quality.Preliminary notes on research still in progress are not acceptable, since Speculum articles should be mature pieces of work, likely to be of long-term value.Work that will soon be published in essentially the same form and using the same language, as part of a book or made available on the internet,
