Damping of Sub-synchronous Resonance Phenomenon in Wind Power Plants Connected to Series Compensated Lines Using Bridge Type Fault Current Limiter

Nowadays, series capacitor compensated transmission lines can be used to increase the active power transmitted in wind power plants. However, this can lead to the phenomenon of sub-synchronous resonance (SSR). On the other hand, capacitive compensation of transmission lines reduces the line impedance, which leads to an increase in the level of short-circuit current in wind power plants. In this paper, for the first time, a resistive bridge type fault current limiter (RBFCL) is used to reduce the sub-synchronous resonance phenomenon and limit the short-circuit current in wind power plants connected to series compensated transmission lines. Then, its performance is compared with static synchronous controllers (STATCOM) and thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) to verify the effectiveness of RBFCL over the other two methods. The wind power plants used in this paper are modeled as an aggregate. Simulation results show that RBFCL not only limits the short-circuit current amplitude in wind power plants, but also effectively damps SSR oscillations caused by IGE conditions.
