The Sonification of Mathematical Beauty: A Comprehensive Analysis of Fibonacci Sequence Applications in Musical Composition

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the Fibonacci sequence's application in musical composition, examining both its mathematical foundations and practical implementation in melodic construction. Through analysis of a compositional methodology that maps Fibonacci numbers to musical scales, this study demonstrates how mathematical principles can generate aesthetically pleasing harmonic structures. The research explores the theoretical underpinnings of the Fibonacci sequence, its relationship to the golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618), and its manifestation in Western musical systems. Drawing upon contemporary research and historical precedents, this paper establishes connections between numerical sequences and auditory perception, contributing to the interdisciplinary field of mathematical music theory. The findings suggest that Fibonacci-based compositions naturally align with harmonic principles inherent in Western music theory, while the initial condition (F₀ = 0) presents unique challenges requiring modification to generate meaningful musical sequences. This work provides both theoretical analysis and practical insights for composers interested in mathematical approaches to music creation.
