Is Limberg Flap the Only Weapon against Pilonidal Sinus Disease? A 2-year Experience at a Premier Tertiary Care Center
Over many decades, pilonidal sinus disease (PNSD) has been considered by many medical experts to be a surgically challenging disease.Limberg rhomboid flap has been used for the past many decades and is the most widely used surgical technique for PNSD worldwide.Over the recent decades, however, many surgeons have developed novel techniques in order to prevent complications in the postoperative period. These techniques include the Karydakis flap, Dufourmentel flap, V-Y advancement flap, and Mohan's flap. The choice of surgical technique has remained with the surgeon operating and based on his experience and comfort with the technique. In our study at a premier tertiary care center, we did a retrospective analysis of 208 cases done and of the complications encountered with these techniques as compared to the Limberg flap. The cases were followed up to a period of 12 months after surgery. The techniques were employed as part of the surgeon's preference. The observations showed that the different techniques employed showed similar rates of complications and recurrence as compared to the Limberg flap, thus proving the absence of monopoly of one particular surgical technique.
