Evidence of Emotional Compression in Chinese Social Media Discourse: An Exploratory Observational Study Supporting the Chinese Emotional Compression Trap (ECT)
This exploratory observational study examines whether emotional compression consistent with the Chinese Emotional Compression Trap (ECT) framework is observable in naturalistic Chinese social media discourse. Using public Xiaohongshu (XHS) posts containing the term 内耗 as an observational entry point, 23 distinct posts were systematically coded using explicit linguistic and functional criteria. Results indicate that multiple emotional stressors are frequently present, yet explicit emotional differentiation is rare. Broad container terms—most prominently 内耗—consistently function as dominant explanatory labels across contexts, insight levels, and resolution strategies. Emotional differentiation emerged as the only observed exit condition from compression. Taken together, the findings provide strong preliminary evidence that emotional compression consistent with the Chinese Emotional Compression Trap (ECT) operates as a baseline interpretive pattern in Chinese social media discourse, rather than appearing only under acute or situational stress. The study provides transparent classification criteria, item-level results, and summary tables, offering a replicable methodological template for further academic and applied research.
