‘Best Possible Business’ : A positive psychology coaching technique for entrepreneurs experiencing burnout

While a growing body of literature is beginning to investigate the wellbeing of entrepreneurs, there remains a lack of practical application of these findings for coaches and coaching psychologists, leaving a gap in translating research into real-world contexts. Given that sole proprietors (often known as solopreneurs) account for 56% of the UK business population as of 2023, and the number of non-employing businesses has increased by 852,000 (26%) since 2010 (Department for Business and Trade, 2023), it is surprising that much of the existing coaching research has focused on entrepreneurs with larger businesses. While stressors such as team management and capital raising are likely major challenges for more established entrepreneurs, solopreneurs likely face different stressors such as social isolation, inconsistent income, blurred work-life boundaries, and pressure to manage all aspects of the business alone. The Best Possible Business coaching intervention is developed with these solopreneurs in mind, addressing the psychological toll these unique challenges present.
