The Impact of Antidepressant Medications on Sleep in Children
Antidepressants are increasingly prescribed for pediatric patients to treat a vast array of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While there is extensive research supporting the efficacy of antidepressants in managing these conditions in the pediatric population, their effects on sleep, an essential component of overall well-being, remain a critical area of interest. This review explores the clinical effects on sleep disorders and the impact of antidepressants on sleep architecture and overall sleep quality in children and adolescents. Further investigation involving longitudinal studies, antidepressant medication comparison, and multifaceted approaches would provide insight into evaluating the impact of certain classes of antidepressants on overall sleep quality.
