Operating Conditions Analysis and Performance Adaptability Evaluation of Fluoroelastomer Seals in Aircraft Applications
ABSTRACT Seal failures during aircraft operation pose a serious threat to flight safety. Typical aviation systems—including the fuselage, engines, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems—often operate under complex conditions such as high temperature (> 200°C), high pressure (> 35 MPa), and highly corrosive media, which present severe challenges to sealing materials. Fluoroelastomer (FKM), owing to its excellent resistance to high temperature, oils, chemical corrosion, and aging, has become the preferred material for critical sealing components. This work systematically evaluates the high/low temperature performance, mechanical properties, tribological behavior, chemical resistance, aging characteristics, and electrical conductivity of FKM under typical aviation service conditions, confirming its outstanding sealing reliability. Nevertheless, performance degradation persists under extreme conditions such as ultra‐high temperature, severe cold, and long‐term service. Future advances require material modification and the development of intelligent self‐adaptive sealing technologies to further enhance its adaptability to harsh environments.
