Imaging diagnosis of temporomandibular joints− Focus on MR images −
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of the condyle, mandibular fossa, articular eminence, articular disc, articular capsule, ligaments, and synovium, so the imaging techniques used depend on the tissue of interest.Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a useful technique for documenting internal derangement of the TMJ.This article described an outline of the interpretation of MR imaging anatomy of the TMJ region. Then, the images are shown of the case with no disc displacement progression to anterior disc displacement (ADD) with reduction, ADD without reduction and osteoarthritis (OA) of the TMJ.The imaging criteria for OA of the TMJ and its interpretation on MR and Computed Tomography (CT) images are described.
