Effectiveness of Nanodrug Delivery System in Optimizing Transdermal Delivery of Polyphenol Compounds
Polyphenolic compounds, as secondary plant metabolites, possess broad therapeutic potential including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. However, the lipophilic and permeable contribute to low bioavailability, thereby restricting the attainment of optimal therapeutic effects. Within the context of transdermal delivery, physiological barriers, such as the stratum corneum, inhibit passive skin penetration or hydrophilicity. Nanotechnology-based pharmaceutical interventions allow these limitations to be addressed effectively. Therefore, the development of nano-based drug delivery systems offers a strategy to enhance drug concentration at the intended site of action. This review describes various transdermal delivery systems, such as nanocrystals, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, transferosomes, nanoliposomes, niosomes and transethosomal with emphasis on physicochemical characteristics. The main objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of nanodrug delivery platforms in enhancing transdermal delivery of polyphenolic compounds. The results of the review indicate that the delivery of polyphenolic nanoparticles improved therapeutic effects by enhancing compound stability, increasing skin permeation and controlling drug release.
