Fungal Quantum Dots and Biohybrid Robots: A Nanobiophysics Framework for Testing Mycelial Consciousness
Mycelial networks generate structured electrical activity capable of controlling biohybrid robots (Science Robotics, 2024) and naturally biosynthesize quantum-grade nanomaterials including CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (RSC Quantum, 2023). This paper proposes a three-layer nanobiophysics interface mycelial quantum field (Layer C), nanodevice transducers (Layer N), and external controller (Layer Q) to probe these networks as biological quantum black boxes: internally opaque systems whose field-level dynamics are inferred from controlled inputs and nano-scale outputs. Three falsifiable device classes test the hypothesis that mycelial geometry implements room-temperature topological quantum error correction hosting a conscious quantum field: 1. **Quantum-dot consciousness interferometer**: Compares QD photon correlations across baseline, anesthetized, and dead mycelium states.2. **Mycelium-controlled nanorobots**: Quantifies excess intentionality (mutual information) versus classical RL baselines in safety-critical environments.3. **Field-programmable nanomemory**: Tracks non-local evolution of hyphal nanoparticle patterns under task/anesthetic conditions. Success yields biotemplated quantum photonic structures, advanced biohybrid robotics, and room-temperature error-correction testbeds. Failure constrains quantum-field consciousness models. The framework parallels quantum-AI interpretability challenges but leverages living substrates with native nanomaterial compatibility, establishing design principles for probing biological quantum black boxes generally.
