A Parametric Workflow for the Design of High-Field Magnets for Optimized Stellarators
A major challenge for stellarators are the complex non-planar 3D coil shapes required to create the necessary magnetic field to confine the plasma. This work presents a parametric approach for the magneto-static and mechanical analysis of stellarator coils, considering Nb3Sn coils with a 12 T peak B-field. In addition, a thermal-hydraulic simulation for the winding pack is performed, which includes the steady state analysis and the determination of the hotspot temperature during a quench. Given the existence of various stellarator configurations, the developed parametric tool for magnetic design will significantly accelerate the overall stellarator design process and its evaluation. The parametric tool has been applied to the HELIAS 5-B configuration which serves as case-study and is using LTS magnets. For HELIAS 5-B, the peak B-field is ∼12 T, with hotspot temperature and margin well within the limits, and the mechanical analysis showing the peak stress only exceeds the allowable limits locally and strain values remain below degradation threshold Nb3Sn.
