XR Drawing: Immersive Experiences, Performativity, and Extended Corporeality in the Expanded Field with Open Brush

Abstract This article examines the intersection of art, technology, and corporeality through a phenomenological approach and case studies. Focusing on virtual reality (VR) drawing, this research investigates how this evolving technology alters the body’s relationship with the act of drawing. It explores how the body both defines and appear to transcend the limits of our experience, leading to a form of extended corporeality. Furthermore, this study connects this emerging practice to Rosalind Krauss's concept of the "expanded field," proposing a form of "expanded drawing." The physical-digital hybridization of VR transforms the creative experience, potentially redefining drawing in terms of materiality, spatiality, and performativity.
