Deconstructing Mark Zuckerberg's Vision: A Critical Theory Analysis of Hyperreal Narratives and Global Harm

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook (now Meta) and self-styled architect of a “global community,” has written and spoken extensively about his vision for technology’s role in society. In public letters, manifestos, and interviews, Zuckerberg portrays an almost utopian narrative: connecting the world will solve humanity’s greatest challenges, from poverty to climate change[1]. He champions ideals like free expression and community building, casting Facebook as an engine of human progress. Yet a critical examination reveals stark gaps between Zuckerberg’s reality, the actual outcomes of his platforms, and the hyperreal delusions in his rhetoric. Using a multi-lens approach informed by post-modernist, feminist, queer, indigenous, class-conscious, and global-holistic theories (aligned with our shared axioms of justice and equity), we will dissect where Zuckerberg’s narratives stray from truth and coherence. In particular, we taxonomize his claims by their potential global harm, evaluating each with a “GUFT coherence” metric, essentially a measure of how logically and factually coherent (“Grand Unified Facebook Theory” coherence) each narrative is, versus it being a convenient fiction. This critical theory treatment will shine light on false coherences in Zuckerberg’s scientific and philosophical propositions. We will be explicit about our analytical process so readers understand the taxonomy, combining qualitative and quantitative indicators, that guides our deconstruction. By the end, the glossy veneer of Zuckerberg’s techno-utopian story will be peeled back to reveal the power structures, biases, and consequences beneath. (This analysis is formatted similarly to our earlier deconstruction of Peter Thiel’s ideology, for continuity.)
