Differential Levels of Grit among Substance Using and Non-Using Youths in Bayelsa State, Nigeria: Implication for Addiction Counselor's Intervention
This study examined differences in grit levels between substance-using and non-using youths in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, and explored the implications for addiction counseling. Using a descriptive comparative design, data were collected from youths using the grit scale and a rapid drug-use testing kit. Descriptive statistics and independent t-test revealed that non-using substance youths demonstrated significantly higher grit scores than substance-using youths, indicating reduced perseverance and goal-directed consistency among those involved in drug use. These findings underscore grit as a relevant psychological variable in understanding vulnerability to substance use and in guiding rehabilitation efforts. The study recommends integrating grit-enhancement strategies such as goal-setting, self-regulation training, and motivational counseling into addiction intervention programs for youths.
