The Golem of Grievance: Spartak Subota and the Psychoanalytic Spectacle of Neoliberal Alpha Males in the Digital Arena

In the shadowed corridors of our neoliberal coliseum, where the spectacle of self-help gurus and viral therapists unfolds like a poorly scripted Greek tragedy, emerges the figure of Spartak Subota — a Ukrainian psychologist, or so he claims, whose rise and fall encapsulates the absurd theater of modern media. Subota, with his velvety baritone and air of weary intellectualism, became a national archetype during Ukraine’s wartime turmoil, a paternal beacon promising rationality amid chaos. Yet, as revelations of his fabricated credentials, dubious affiliations, and ethical lapses surfaced, he morphed into a lightning rod for collective scorn. Here, we witness the creation of a digital Golem: not the clay giant of Jewish folklore, animated by divine inscription, but a media construct forged from the desperate clay of societal loneliness, homosocial yearnings, and the relentless machinery of public relations. This essay, with a sardonic nod to the ironies of our age, dissects how such figures — alpha males broadcasting strength, confidence, and goal-oriented prowess — are birthed from the womb of neoliberal isolation, only to be ritually despised for embodying the very illusions capitalism sells us. We shall draw upon left psychoanalytical traditions, Marxist philosophy, sociological critiques, and cultural theory to illuminate this paradox, all while warming our hands at the fire of Subota’s inadvertent revelations about our fractured society. For in his scandalous glow, Subota spotlights the hypocrisies of a world where therapy is commodified, desire displaced, and authenticity a luxury few can afford.
