Recent Updates and Exploring Neuroregeneration Propensity of Dashamoola: An Ancient Ayurvedic Formulation

Dashamoola, often referred to as Dashamula, Dashamoola, Dashmulam, or Dashamul, is a herbaceous plant used for more than 3000 years in traditional Ayurvedic treatment. The name “Dashamoola” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Dash” meaning ten and “mula” meaning root. According to ancient philosophies such as Charaka and Sushruta Samhita, Dashamoola is a traditional Ayurvedic formula comprising 10 dried roots of 10 different plants. Ayurvedic concoction of Dashamoola has been used for many years in Indian medicine because the main objective of this formulation is to balance Vata Dosha imbalances, which are often linked to neurological problems, and it has anti-inflammatory properties that may help relieve inflammation in illnesses like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Moreover, other formulations like Dashamoola kwath can potentially strengthen the immune system’s defense against neurodegenerative disorders due to their immunomodulatory properties. This review documents and examines Dashamoola as a possible treatment for central nervous system problems for the first time. The present study covers its traditional uses; botanical descriptions; contemporary phytochemicals, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins; and pharmacological activities. Moreover, compiled clinical trial data revealed that Dashamoola and its bioactive compounds prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. This review aims to establish a correlation between the phytochemical profile and the mechanism of action of Dashamoola, which will provide researchers a potential therapeutic approach against various neurological diseases.
