Modeling Opinion Formation as a Networked Process: A Network-Based Mini-Project

Democratic decision-making relies on collective processes shaped by patterns of interaction, influence, and deliberation. This research note presents a simple computational model of opinionformation on networks to examine how different interaction structures affect collective outcomesunder identical behavioral rules. Using synthetic centralized and decentralized networks, we simulatemajority-based opinion updates and compare convergence dynamics. The results show that networkstructure alone strongly influences the speed and trajectory of consensus formation. While highlysimplified, the model illustrates how computational approaches can support democratic analysis bymaking structural assumptions explicit and enabling transparent, perspective-aware reasoning aboutcollective decision-making processes.
