Reinterpreting Dimensionality in Physics: A Proposal for Ontological Dimensions
Contemporary physics often conflates geometrical coordinates with fundamentally distinct structural degrees of freedom, leading to conceptual confusion regarding time and spacetime. We propose a framework of Ontological Dimensions (OD), which distinguishes the fundamental types of structural organization: OD1 – Informational dimension (space of possible states without geometry or temporal ordering) OD2 – Causal dimension (ordering of state transitions, past ↔ future) OD3 – Spatial dimension (geometric reconstruction of stable relational patterns, with x, y, z as orientations of a single spatial entity) This system preserves the clarity of numeric labels while avoiding misconceptions about the nature of time and spatial axes, aligns with emergent spacetime and holographic principles, and enhances conceptual precision in foundational physics.
