The Zakarpattia (Transcarpathian) Cantorial Tradition before 1944: Regional Centers, Styles, and a Preliminary Reconstruction
This preliminary study presents the first systematic regional framework for understanding the cantorial tradition of Zakarpattia (Transcarpathian region) prior to 1944. The paper introduces the concept of the Zakarpattia Cantorial School, maps fifteen regional cantorial centers, and examines the historical rupture that led to the disappearance of this tradition. The study aims to establish a humanitarian and analytical foundation for further research and responsible engagement with this dimension of Jewish intangible cultural heritage.
