Experimental study on Performance and Emission characteristics of a Diesel Engine Using Diesel-Jatropha biodiesel blended with Ethylene Glycol Diacetate additive

The present study examines the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine using Diesel-Jatropha bio-diesel blends with ethylene glycol diacetate (EGDA) as an oxygenated additive. Various blends as DB97ED3, DB94ED6, DB91ED9 were tested under various loading conditions, and results were compared to pure diesel (D100) and diesel-biodiesel (DB) blends. The inclusion of EGDA enhanced brake thermal efficiency (BTE), especially at higher loads, with DB97ED3 depicting a 12.4% rise in BTE at overload condition compared to DB. Specific fuel consumption (SFC) found decreasing with rise in load, with DB97ED3 showing the lowest SFC at medium loads. CO emissions has shown a significant drop using EGDA, with DB91ED9 has shown drop in CO emissions by 39% at full load compared to D100. HC emissions were also reduced owing to the enhanced combustion kinetics from the oxygen-rich EGDA. However, NOx emissions were controlled as EGDA lowered peak combustion temperatures, resulting in more uniform combustion. DB97ED3 has shown best performance results while DB91ED9 has shown best emission results.
