We describe the case of an 88-year-old woman who had been living in a residential care facility for over six years. It illustrates the ability to recognise others within the framework of a research protocol. The objective was to offer the resident repeated encounters with a previously unfamiliar person and subsequently assess, through video analyses, the potential emergence of the ability to recognise others over the course of the sessions. This case highlights the emotional interactions between an elderly person with Alzheimer's disease and an investigator, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of implicit recognition towards others within the caregiver–patient relationship. The persistence of this implicit sense of recognition towards others, understood here as the perception of being identified or the experience of implicit familiarity, emerged through repeated interactions, in which non-verbal and emotional components played a major role. This work offers a reflection on the importance of relational aspects in the care of older adults in institutional settings, casting light on the relationship between Alzheimer's disease and the ability to recognise others.
