Modeling and Impact of Flexible AC Distribution Systems in Medium-Voltage Grids

Flexible AC transmission systems, so-called FACTS, are already established in the transmission grid and have become an essential part of grid operation. In distribution grids, these technologies have so far only been considered to a limited extent. With the increasing number of novel loads and decentralized generation units in the distribution grids, congestion management is becoming increasingly relevant. Therefore, flexible AC distribution systems can become an option at the distribution level to address these challenges. This paper presents the modeling of different types of flexible AC distribution systems for medium-voltage grids and the integration into quasi-stationary power system analysis, implying completely different system behavior compared to the transmission level. This behavior is investigated and evaluated within a realistic medium-voltage grid model.
