Carbon emissions of China's battery electric vehicles in 2021: An MRIO-Based LCA with disaggregation by 190 countries/regions and 26 economic sectors

This dataset provides a comprehensive, multi-regional assessment of the life cycle carbon emissions associated with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sold in China, using the BYD Qin model as a case study. The analysis is conducted for the year 2021 and is based on the EORA 26 global multi-regional input-output (MRIO) database. The core of the dataset comprises detailed carbon footprint calculations generated via a hybrid MRIO-based Life Cycle Assessment (MRIO-based LCA) methodology. The system boundary encompasses the complete life cycle of the vehicle, disaggregated into four distinct phases: Manufacturing Phase: Emissions from material extraction, component production, and vehicle assembly. Driving Phase (Use Phase): Emissions associated with electricity consumption for vehicle operation, accounting for the generation mix of the charging location. Battery Replacement Phase: Emissions linked to the production and installation of a replacement battery pack, assuming one replacement within the vehicle's lifetime. Scrapping Phase (End-of-Life): Emissions from vehicle dismantling, recycling, and waste processing. The results are presented in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (ton CO₂-eq). A key feature of this dataset is its high-resolution spatial and sectoral breakdown: Spatial Attribution: The global carbon footprint is allocated across 189 individual countries and territories, plus one aggregate "Rest of the World" (ROW) region. This reveals the transnational distribution of emissions triggered by BEV production and use in China. Sectoral Attribution: Emissions are further traced back to 26 economic sectors as defined in the EORA 26 classification, identifying the specific industrial activities responsible throughout the supply chain. This dataset is intended to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry analysts interested in sustainable transportation, environmental footprint accounting, and supply chain sustainability. It facilitates the analysis of emission hotspots, the understanding of global value chain impacts, and the assessment of decarbonization strategies for the electric vehicle industry.
