Local Topological Singularities of Maps into $S^{3}$
This paper develops a local degree theory for continuous maps from oriented four-manifolds into the 3-sphere with closed singular sets. An integer-valued local degree is assigned to each compact component of the singular set using linking three-manifolds and de Rham cohomology, and is shown to be well defined, additive, and invariant under local homotopies. For isolated point singularities, the local degree classifies maps up to homotopy on punctured neighborhoods and characterizes removability under a null-homotopy condition. For one-dimensional defects, it defines a locally constant charge along the defect. As an application, the paper proves degree conservation on genuine product regions, showing that any change in degree requires either singularities or a failure of product topology. The framework is purely topological and was motivated in part by models of internal time orientation formulated as (S^{3})-valued fields.
