The Role of Education in Fostering Citizenship and Moral Values

Education is widely acknowledged as a key factor in human development and societal advancement, having an impact that goes beyond intellectual development to include the formation of people's civic identities and moral compass. Restoring social cohesion and trust within communities shattered by war and instability is a pressing task for the educational system in conflict-recovering regions like Tigray and Ethiopia. However, because the social and political unrest interferes with the delivery of the curriculum and student engagement, the protracted conflict has made it extremely difficult for schools to effectively teach students moral values and citizenship. This research aims to comprehend how education in these post-conflict settings can support the development of values necessary for democratic engagement and peaceful coexistence, such as respect, accountability, tolerance, and patriotism. In order to do this, a qualitative research methodology was used, which included interviews with educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers who have firsthand knowledge of the local educational system in addition to a comprehensive examination of national curricula and policy documents. This all-encompassing approach made it possible to examine the formal curriculum as well as the actual experiences of civic and moral education in Tigray. Despite the challenges that conflict presents, the results show that students are more likely to develop moral character and active citizenship when values-based education is purposefully combined with culturally appropriate materials and interactive teaching techniques. This study aims to comprehend how education in these post-conflict settings can support the development of values necessary for democratic engagement and peaceful coexistence.
