Migration-Related Differences in Academic Outcomes: Insights from the Italian Higher Education System
Abstract This study investigates differences in academic attainment among Italian students, international students, and second-generation students enrolled in Bachelor’s degree programmes at Italian universities in the 2015/2016 academic year. Drawing on longitudinal administrative data and applying multinomial logistic regression models, we analyse the influence of socio-demographic factors and prior educational achievement on academic outcomes. The results show significant differences in academic attainment between Italian students and those with a migrant background, with nuanced distinctions between groups based on citizenship and prior educational background. This research highlights the need for policy interventions to enhance educational opportunities for students with a migrant background.
