2023 TURKEY EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE - LESSONS LEARNED FROM A REVIEW OF THE PERFORMANCE OF POWER FACILITIES

The Turkey earthquake sequence of February 6, 2023 was exceptional in many aspects. The fault surface rupture was over 400 km long. Peak ground accelerations exceeding 1.0g were recorded at multiple stations, half a dozen of which were located less than 1 km from the fault scar. The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Lifelines team (co-sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other institutions) performed a reconnaissance investigation in March 17-23, 2023 in the strong motion region and documented the performance of structures, systems, and components (SSCs) at a wide range of facilities, including power plants, hydro-dams, LPG terminals, hospitals, university campuses, electrical substations, and water and wastewater treatment plants. This paper summarizes the main lessons learned for industry practitioners on the performance of structures and equipment at power facilities visited by the EERI Lifelines Team.##################################################
