Ruptures of the extensor apparatus on total knee prosthesis
This paper presents a comprehensive review of ruptures of the extensor apparatus on total knee prosthesis. We explore the incidence, risk factors, and clinical presentation of this complication, along with the current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Our findings suggest that while the occurrence of extensor apparatus ruptures is relatively rare, it poses a significant challenge due to its impact on knee function and the complexity of treatment. Risk factors range from patient-related aspects such as rheumatoid arthritis, corticosteroid use, osteoporosis, and obesity, to surgical factors like the type of prosthesis and surgical technique. The paper further discusses the classification of these ruptures based on the fracture’s appearance, the stability of the patellar implant, and the integrity of the extensor apparatus. We conclude with a discussion on the need for further research to optimize prevention and management strategies for this serious complication following TKA.
