The Linguistic and Cultural Origins of Te Hu Ti: A Mesopotamian Key to the Name of Thoth

The expression β€œTe Hu Ti”, commonly rendered in Egyptological transliteration as Djehuty (π“‚§π“Šƒπ“π“…±π“π“), designates the god Thoth, a central figure in the Egyptian pantheon as lord of knowledge, writing, and time. Although scholarly literature has traditionally focused on internal Egyptian explanations for the origin of this name, certain phonetic and semantic features suggest the possibility of a more complex linguistic stratification, rooted in intercultural contacts between the Mesopotamian region and the Nile Valley during the late Predynastic period (fourth millennium BCE).The expression β€˜Te Hu Ti’ may be analytically approached, for heuristic purposes only, as a segmentation that allows the identification of potential phonetic and semantic convergences with Mesopotamian lexical or formulaic patterns, without implying a historical or etymological decomposition of the Egyptian theonym. The present research explores the possibility that the expression β€˜Te Hu Ti’ may reflect linguistic patterns or conceptual structures comparable to those attested in Sumerian and Akkadian, within the context of early interregional contacts. The objective is twofold: first, to determine whether any linguistically meaningful correspondences can be proposed between the analytical sequence β€œTe Hu Ti” and Mesopotamian lexical or formulaic patterns; and second, to assess the historical and religious implications of an early process of cultural transmission, which may have contributed to the formation of one of the most emblematic divine names of ancient Egypt. This study provides the first systematic attempt to integrate Mesopotamian lexical analysis into the etymological discussion of the name Te Hu Ti.
