Bone allograft : Preliminary results of the bone bank of the CHU Mohammed VI of Marrakech

Bone allografts have gained a privileged place in the therapeutic arsenal in orthopedic surgery, due to the bone bank that currently delivers cryo-preserved femoral heads. Our work aims to appreciate bone allografts as a mode of skeleton reconstruction and to evaluate its effectiveness based on different indications through the analysis of postoperative results, including functional and radiological results. This is a prospective descriptive study of fifteen cases of cryopreserved femoral head bone allografts from the bone bank over a 2-year period from April 2018 to February 2020. Our patients were divided into 3 groups based on the indications for allografting: PTH revision group (73%), tumor reconstruction group (20%) and pseudarthrosis group (7%). The average age of the PTH revision group was 69 years, that of the tumor reconstruction group was 28 years, while that of the pseudarthrosis group was 25 years. A clear female predominance was noted in our series. Preoperative and postoperative clinical evaluation of patients operated for PTH revision was performed using the Postel and Merle d'Aubigné score. Evaluation of bone loss of the cotyle was classified according to the SOFCOT 99 classification. The average postoperative follow-up was 10 months. Our clinical and radiological results were judged to be good to very good in the majority of cases with good integration of the bone allograft. Postoperative complications were marked by: one case of posterior hip dislocation, one case of postoperative infection surgically repaired.
