Evaluation of different scaffolds and intracanal medications in revascularization of nonvital immature permanent teeth
Abstract Aim To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of regenerative endodontic procedures in immature nonvital permanent teeth using concentrated growth factor (CGF) compared to blood clot (BC) as scaffolds with two different intra-canal medications [double antibiotic paste (DAP) and Propolis]. Patients and methods Forty patients aged from 8 to 18 years needing endodontic therapy of permanent anterior teeth were chosen for this study. Patients were randomly separated into four equal groups ( n = 10) according to scaffold type and intracanal medication utilized in the treatment as; group I: BC scaffold and DAP intracanal medication, group II: CGF scaffold and DAP intracanal medication, group III: BC scaffold and Propolis intracanal medication, group IV: CGF scaffold and Propolis intracanal medication. Patients were assessed clinically for presence of spontaneous pain, tenderness to percussion and sinus tract and radiographically for any alterations in root length, root canal width and lesion size if present. Radiographic CBCT examination was performed immediately postoperative, at 6 and 12 months follow-up. Results Clinically, all patients were completely asymptomatic throughout the study. Radiographically, concerning the percentage of root length increase, canal diameter reduction and lesion size reduction group II showed superior results with a statistically significant difference among groups. Conclusions CGF is superior to BC as a scaffold and DAP is better than Propolis as an intracanal medication when they are used during revascularization of immature nonvital teeth.
