Absorption of the Vibration Energy of Overhead Power Lines by Means of a Magnetorheological Damper

The design and operating principle of a magnetorheological damper are examined, and its static and dynamic equations are presented, which are used to develop a computer model of its dynamic behavior. The dependences of vibration energy dissipated by a damper on the periodic excitation frequency are obtained for various damping ratios. The optimal damping ratio for a passive damper is determined, which achieves the best vibration damping in the frequency range from 0.1 to 100 Hz. It is found that, by controlling the damping ratio, the amount of energy absorbed by the damper increases by 20–25% compared to operation with a constant optimal damping ratio.
