A Study of Operating Modes in a 10-kV Closed-Circuit Electrical Network with a Distributed Generation Source and a Thyristor Voltage Regulator

An approach to managing power flows in a medium-voltage distribution electric grid when powering electricity consumers from a centralized electric grid and from distributed generation sources has been considered. The use of a thyristor voltage regulator in a closed medium-voltage network makes it possible to redistribute the power consumed from the centralized electric grid and the distributed generation sources. The power flow through the thyristor regulator is controlled by transverse voltage regulation, i.e., by changing the phase shift between the input and output voltages of the device. To evaluate the effectiveness of transverse regulation using a thyristor regulator, a mathematical model of a closed distribution grid with a power supply, load, and thyristor regulator has been proposed. The calculation of grid parameters has been performed by the method of nodal potentials. The main modes of the grid have been studied: at nominal and maximal load and at intermittent power generation by distributed generation devices. Based on the research results, it has been possible to evaluate the effect of the thyristor regulator on the parameters of grid modes, changes in power flows, and losses in the grid, as well as to provide various options for the consumption of active power from the centralized electric grid and the distributed generation sources.
