“My Desire Outweighed my Fear”: A Qualitative Study Investigating Talent Development in Elite Male Ballet Dancers
Talent development is a complex area, including a combination of intrapersonal elements, environmental influences and chance. Using in-depth interviews with nine retired principal dancers, this study examined the unique challenges male ballet dancers face as they navigate their talent trajectories, identifying six key developmental phases. Findings highlighted the importance of a supportive atmosphere and strong relationships, fostering motivation, resilience, and a deep commitment to their craft. Once these dancers achieved principal status, they relied heavily on psychosocial skills in response to heightened pressures and expectations.
