The Lost Wisdom of Lakśmaṇotsava: Unearthing a Fifteenth-Century Ayurvedic Manuscript

A bstract Background: Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, has developed through centuries of intellectual refinement, beginning with the foundational texts of the Bṛhattrayī – Caraka Saṃhitā, Suśruta Saṃhitā, Aṣṭāṅga Saṃgraha , and Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya . This evolution continued through medieval compositions such as Mādhava Nidāna, Śārṅgadhara Saṃhitā , and Bhāvaprakāśa . However, many texts from this rich period remain under-explored, preserved only in manuscript form without critical editions or scholarly engagement. Objective: This article seeks to reintroduce Lakśmaṇotsava (LU), a neglected Ayurvedic manuscript composed around 1450 CE, to the scholarly Ayurvedic community. Positioned chronologically between Śārṅgadhara (thirteenth CE) and Bhāvaprakāśa (sixteenth CE), the text emerges from a transitional period marked by classical continuity and sociocultural shifts, including the Mughal influence. Materials and Methods: A textual and historiographical approach is used to examine the manuscript’s provenance, historical positioning, and scholarly neglect. Available catalog references and manuscript repositories were surveyed to trace the document’s existence and contextualize its potential value. Results: Despite its promising location within the Ayurvedic literary continuum, LU remains unpublished and unanalyzed. No critical edition, commentary, or academic study has addressed its contents, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of medieval Ayurvedic development. Conclusion: The neglect of LU represents a broader scholarly overview of medieval Ayurvedic texts. This study enriches the historical understanding of medical thought, pharmacology, and cultural exchange in fifteenth CE India. This article advocates renewed academic attention to the manuscript to uncover its contributions to Ayurvedic tradition and Indian intellectual history.
