When Biology Fails: Re-examining the 950-Year Mission of the Prophet Nūḥ Through Resilience Theory
This paper examines the Qurʾānic account of the Prophet Nūḥ’s 950-year mission as a stress-test for contemporary theories of human resilience. Drawing on research from stress physiology, trauma psychology, religious coping, and comparative religious studies, the analysis evaluates whether known biological and psychological mechanisms are sufficient to account for sustained functional endurance under prolonged and continuous adversity. Using a conceptual severity–duration framework, the study compares predicted stress-related breakdown timelines derived from modern empirical literature with the endurance profile described in the Qurʾānic narrative, while situating the account within parallel Jewish and Christian traditions. Analog populations exposed to extreme but finite adversity are examined solely to illustrate upper empirical boundaries of documented human endurance.
