Advancing Renewable Microgrid Systems in Mosul:Integration Strategies and Management Solutions

Abstract: The global transition toward sustainable energy systems is accelerating, driven by increasing environmental concerns, the volatility of fossil fuel markets, and the need for energy security. In regions like Mosul, Iraq-where infrastructure has faced significant disruption-developing resilient and sustainable energy solutions is particularly urgent. Microgrids, powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, offer a viable path to decentralize electricity supply, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease reliance on costly diesel generators. However, effective integration and management of renewable resources in microgrids remain technically challenging due to their intermittent and unpredictable nature. Omar Abdulwahid College of Engineering University of Mosul Mosul, Iraq [email protected] characterized by distinct load types and consumption patterns, including residential, industrial, municipal, and agricultural sectors. Hourly load profiles were synthesized from historical consumption data provided by the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity (2023), reflecting seasonal demand variation. The graph in Figure 1 shows seasonal temperature variations, which contribute to peak load demand. Conventional control strategies often struggle to maintain system stability, especially when renewable supply exceeds demand or fluctuates rapidly. In this context, intelligent control methods are essential to ensure efficient energy dispatch and storage coordination. This study proposes a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to enhance power management across four interconnected microgrid zones in Mosul. The controller dynamically balances load demands, optimizes energy storage usage, and reduces diesel dependency, providing a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution. Through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink, the system demonstrates its potential to transform microgrid operations, contributing to a smarter, cleaner, and more resilient energy future for regions.
