Design Innovation Integration of Passenger Density Detection Information System on BRT Through ESP32 Microcontroller-based Infrared Sensor as an Effort to Optimize Passenger Distribution Between BRTs in Tulungagung Regency

Efforts to improve the comfort of BRT users as a planned mass transportation system in Tulungagung Regency need to be made to reduce traffic congestion and shorten the headway of existing feeder transportation. Passengers experience discomfort due to overcrowding in some vehicles during busy periods. To minimize uneven passenger density between vehicles, this study aims to create a passenger density information system for each vehicle so that passengers can be distributed evenly across all available vehicles during peak service periods. The research method used was main characteristic of experimental research is trying something and observing systematically and meticulously what happens from an effort deliberately made by the researcher. The findings were that the passenger density information system for each vehicle could be accessed by passengers through LCD screens at bus stops and smartphone applications. The prototype development experiment produced an infrared sensor-based module using a microcontroller, which is an applicable, adaptive, and affordable technology. The main objectives of this research are to achieve broad benefits and long-term impacts through increased comfort and operational income. This innovation is an appropriate measure and is expected to be implemented by the government to improve transportation and reduce the high traffic congestion index in the CBD of Tulungagung Regency.
