Implementing environmental efficiencies in aviation using lean six sigma in air traffic control

This paper demonstrates how air traffic services, by collaborating closely with airline customers, can implement environmental initiatives that also yield financial benefits through the application of Lean Six Sigma techniques. By streamlining operational processes -specifically those related to the descent and arrival phases of flight - aviation stakeholders can reduce fuel consumption and associated CO₂ emissions, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible industry. The research involved redesigning a process using Lean Six Sigma tools to optimize outcomes for both cost efficiency and environmental impact. The initiative, focused on aircraft arriving at Cork Airport, engaged multiple stakeholders including a neighbouring Air Navigation Service Provider and the Dublin Airport Authority. Findings reveal that by actively listening to both internal and external customer voices and applying Lean Six Sigma principles, air traffic services can effectively eliminate waste, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver measurable environmental improvements. While Lean Six Sigma has been widely adopted across various sectors of aviation, its application within air traffic control remains limited. This study offers a novel contribution by illustrating how these methodologies can be successfully employed in a highly regulated domain to drive meaningful change. • By applying LSS, air traffic services can cut fuel use while improving cost efficiency. • Air traffic processes were redesigned to reduce waste and deliver measurable benefits. • DMADV framework can drive sustainable changes in air traffic control.
