The Action Space of the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology: Axioms, Equivalent Lagrangians, and Model Variants

We formulate the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology (STFO) as a covariant field theory of a scalar time field τ(x^μ) coupled to gravity and matter. Starting from explicit axioms—time as a dynamical scalar, a normalized temporal congruence, variational dynamics with second-order equations of motion, and no additional fundamental fields beyond (g_{μν}, τ)—we construct a minimal reference action and characterize its action space: the family of Lagrangians compatible with these axioms. We show how different formulations involving the kinetic scalar X, the unit temporal vector n_μ, the expansion scalar Ω, and the deformation tensor C_{μν} are equivalent under field redefinitions and constraints. We then identify physically distinct model branches via generalized kinetic structure, higher-order temporal elasticity, and disformal matter couplings. This paper formally anchors the Lagrangian foundation of the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology and provides the reference action used by related black hole, cosmological, and thermodynamic STFO applications. Version 1.1 — Entropy–Ontology Clarification Update This update adds a formal clarification distinguishing the Scalar Temporal Field $\tau(x)$ as a fundamental dynamical degree of freedom, rather than a thermodynamic or statistical variable. The revision explicitly states that singularity regularization, temporal elasticity, and the arrow of time arise from field-theoretic dynamics, while entropy and thermodynamic behavior emerge only as coarse-grained, macroscopic interpretations. No changes were made to the action, field equations, stress–energy tensors, or phenomenological predictions. This update addresses a clarification raised by external feedback. Thank you for your time. Update 1.2 — Clarification on Temporal Ontology and Circularity. This update adds a new Section 1.2 that formally addresses and resolves common misinterpretations regarding ontological circularity in the Scalar Temporal Field Ontology. The revision emphasizes that the manifold is defined without pre-existing metric or temporal structure, and that all causal and geometric features arise solely from the scalar field τ(x) via its gradient and induced disformal metric. This makes explicit the hierarchical structure:manifold → τ → g̃μν → matter, and confirms that the theory does not presuppose the physical time it seeks to explain.
