Emerging Underworld: On a quest for dancing presence
This text explores the relationship between dance, presence and the inner experience of the body. The author reflects on their journey as a dancer and choreographer, emphasizing the importance of evocation over illustration in art. They introduce their methodology called accountable temporary expedients, which encourages performers to engage in a dialogue with their bodies and surroundings, fostering a state of criticality and self-awareness. The practice also aims to create temporary communities where individuals can explore their inner workings, personal values, challenge assumptions and embrace vulnerability. Through tasks that provoke reactions and encourage deep listening, the methodology seeks to generate a dance that transcends definitions and expectations, allowing for a direct expression of the inner body. Ultimately, the text advocates for a dance that is alive, present and unbound by the constraints of time and narrative, inviting participants to witness and engage with the unfolding experience of movement.
