A Study on the Development of BIM Execution Plan for Small Architectural Offices

In general, a BIM Execution Plan is developed to present a detailed implementation strategy for BIM applications in order to satisfy the client’s BIM task instructions and BIM requirement definitions. However, in small-scale architectural design projects, clients typically do not request BIM deliverables, and thus designers are not obligated to prepare a BIM Execution Plan. Nevertheless, to apply BIM effectively and reasonably in architectural design, the establishment of a BIM execution plan remains essential. This study investigates the development of a BIM Execution Plan suitable for small architectural design firms undertaking small-scale projects. The aim is to enable architects to clearly define the scope of tasks across design phases through the preparation and utilization of a BIM Execution Plan, thereby supporting rational and sustainable BIM implementation. The research methodology includes focus group interviews, analysis of architectural design processes and deliverables, and the proposal of a sample BIM Execution Plan accompanied by a case study project. The findings suggest that the proposed BIM Execution Plan can serve as a practical tool to facilitate the adoption and continuous use of BIM in small architectural design offices.
