Exploring forms of rural-urban dynamics in Sebata, Oromia, Ethiopia

Rural–urban linkages represent the interdependence between rural and urban areas through sectoral and spatial connections. This study examines the forms of rural–urban linkages in Sebata Sub-City and its surrounding rural areas in Oromia, Ethiopia. The study employed both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected from rural and urban household heads, government officials, and relevant experts through household surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. Secondary data were obtained from official reports, books, and journal articles. The findings indicate that both sectoral and spatial linkages play significant roles in connecting rural and urban households. Sectoral linkages, particularly those related to agricultural activities, are slightly more prominent, underscoring the central role of agriculture in rural–urban linkages. These linkages are primarily reflected in the exchange of agricultural products, including crops and livestock. Spatial linkages, mainly through the movement of people, emphasize the importance of physical connections for trade and other socio-economic activities between rural and urban areas. Overall, the study concludes that strengthening sectoral linkages through agriculture and enhancing spatial linkages through trade and population movement are crucial for promoting socio-economic development in the study area.
