Biosynthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using Noni Fruit Extract (Morinda citrifolia) for Indigo Carmine Photodegradation
Abstract: Biosynthesis of ZnO nanoparticles was carried out using noni fruit extract (Morinda citrifolia) as a capping agent with Zn(NO3)2.6H2O as a precursor and hexamethylenetetramine as a stabilizer. ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by UV-DRS, FTIR, XRD, and FESEM-EDX. Based on these characterizations, ZnO nanoparticles have a band gap energy that matches UV light, a hexagonal and cubic crystal system with an average crystal size for ZnO synthesized using noni fruit extract (ZnO-M) smaller than commercial ZnO. FTIR characterization shows the presence of an absorption peak originating from noni fruit extract which acts as a capping agent. The particle size distribution of ZnO-M was also obtained smaller than commercial ZnO. ZnO-M nanoparticles can degrade indigo carmine compounds up to 99.79%.
