Aerodynamic design optimization of a bell-mouth shaped air outlet

Air outlet with bell mouth is designed to reduce the total pressure drop and the energy consumption in the ventilation system. It also affects the air distribution, air quality, and thermal comfort in the occupied zone. In this study, the local resistance coefficients of various-aspect-ratio air outlets, equipped with different curvatures and lengths of the bell mouth, are investigated under different air velocities. ANSYS fluent is used to parametrically experiment with different air outlet designs to figure out the optimized design of the geometry of a bell-mouth shaped air outlet. The optimal design has smaller loss coefficient than conventional air outlets. It is helpful for the design of efficient air outlets and the reduction of energy consumption of the ventilation system.
